“Ooohs,” “aahs,” and a backdrop of stars

Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
the Gunpowder treason and plot.
I know of no reason why the Gunpowder treason,
should ever be forgot …

That familiar English nursery rhyme  ̶  so beloved of bonfire aficionados since the late 19th century   ̶ may now have fallen into disuse, but the events of November 5, 1605, continue to resonate through the annals of history.

As aggrieved activist and erstwhile soldier, Guido (Guy) Fawkes was plotting the dastardly assassination of King James I, little did he know we would still be celebrating what would prove to be a momentous failure, and his eventual undoing, more than 400 years later.

A familiar fixture on the Old Rectory calendar, Bonfire Night is traditionally a time for residents and staff to welcome friends, family, and members of the local community  ̶  including many of the local schoolchildren  ̶  to join us for an evening of fun and fireworks when the gardens come alive under a wash of reflective colour; and this year was no exception.

As the temperature dropped, it was time to don our cosiest coats and scarves and enjoy a glass of mulled wine or a mug of hot chocolate, along with a freshly cooked hot dog, to fortify us against the crisp autumnal weather. And thanks to our wonderful kitchen staff, everyone remained warm and well fed for the duration of the evening.

Under the cloak of night, the sky lit up as it fizzed and crackled to sound of rockets brushing the treetops on their way to exploding overhead, accompanied by the excited cries of the children who watched the pyrotechnics unfold with snacks in one hand and sparklers glowing in the other.

Yet amongst the flurry of activity, there was also an opportunity for quiet reflection. Many of our residents found time to share stories of past celebrations; cherished childhood memories and recollections of long-established family traditions that added context to the occasion and a fascinating insight into British cultural life.

Such conversations serve to remind us that events like these can be a welcome catalyst for reminiscence and connection, providing the chance to feel part of something meaningful, while never forgetting to make sure we have lots of fun!

And as the evening’s excitement grew to a close, residents retired to the comfort of a welcoming lounge, safe from the nip of the cold night’s air, where a warming buffet and the opportunity to unwind in relaxed surroundings awaited.

At The Old Rectory, we are always striving to create experiences that enrich the lives of all who take part. This year, seeing so many familiar faces gathered in our picturesque grounds  ̶  standing shoulder to shoulder with new-found friends and sharing a sense of companionship  ̶  the feeling of togetherness that runs as a thread through our daily lives seemed somehow stronger than ever.

As always, we extend our sincere gratitude to staff, residents, and our delightful guests  ̶  all of whom made the night so memorable. Until next year, wrap up warm, batten down the hatches for the winter to come, and let’s briefly return to the nursery rhyme, that ends with…

Holloa, boys, holloa, boys!
make the bells ring.
God save the King!
Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!
