35 years of care at The Old Rectory
Anniversary Barbecue: September 2024
On September 9, 2024, The Old Rectory – a local landmark at the heart of the Ewhurst Village community – celebrated 35 years of exceptional care and nursing provision.
Initially the vision of two remarkable individuals: Paddy and Joanne Geoghegan, what began in 1989 with just three available guest rooms, rapidly flourished under their stewardship into what is now a highly respected 36-bed care facility operated by 60 staff that has attracted residents from across Surrey – a testament to their passion, dedication, and boundless energy.
To mark the occasion, our beautiful garden played host to a summer barbecue where residents, staff, and visitors took advantage of a surprisingly balmy day to spread warmth and laughter while reflecting on a journey that has been three and a half decades in the making.
Honouring us with their presence were founders Paddy and Joanne who received an enthusiastic welcome. A sense of pride in their legacy was evident as they shared stories with staff members and long-term residents before taking a moment to address the assembled guests in recognition of the contribution of all those who, by their tireless efforts, make The Old Rectory such a special place:
“From housekeeping and catering to nursing and activities, every person who walks through our doors brings warmth, compassion, and dedication. It’s clear from the residents’ smiles and kind words today just how deeply your hard work is appreciated,” said Joanne.
Looking back to see the future
As Registered Manager and Head of Resident Services, Adarsh Saini remarked in a humorous and well-received speech:
“Turn the clock back 35 years and life was quite different… Margaret Thatcher was still prime minister… Parliament had only just begun broadcasting debates from the House of Commons… and although the first fully operation GPS satellite had recently been launched, we were still getting lost without Google Maps!”
Different times, indeed. But thankfully, some things have remained reassuringly constant in the intervening years. The Old Rectory’s avowed intent to deliver outstanding care while providing a ‘home from home’ is as important to us now as it was on that first day, 35 years ago.
A day to remember
As the afternoon air teemed with good conversation, guests were treated to classic barbecue fare. Sizzling sausages and fresh summery salads sat alongside a tempting selection of homemade desserts – all lovingly prepared by our talented catering team – to be enjoyed in the company of friends, colleagues, and loved ones alike as we reflected on our shared history and genuine bonds forged over time.
And as we look ahead, a milestone such as this only serves to remind us of the true value of care. It’s not simply a matter of providing a service; it’s about relationships, trust, respect, and creating a meaningful shared experience.
So, let’s raise a glass to last 35 years and welcome many more of the same filled with compassion, connection, and continuity of care as we negotiate the future together.
